Literature Text

When in the glow of morning's birth, alone,
I saw a shadow, caught in dawn's first light.
I heard a tiptoe, soft on cold, worn stone,
Then whoosh of feathers into dying night.
I turned to watch an owl rise up and glide.
In fear of skies grown brighter, he had fled.
Then, suddenly, a laugh! I shook and spied
A faceless void, in whisp'ring names now dead.
I screamed. Away I flew, and far away
I turned to watch the shadow under eaves
Of houses once familiar. Then the day
Slipped over, stole the shadow on the breeze.
Unseen, it lurks in shafts of clear, warm shine.
It dawned on me that the shadow was mine.
100 Theme Challenge And I'm going in order :)

Sort of related. I had this weird idea of dawn breaking, the break away from a community of the living (a.k.a. death), and other random stuff related to the connotations of the expression "Break Away." There are quite a few uses of "away" in this piece, though "break" isn't ever used...

Anyhow, enjoy. I'd love feedback (I  your comments!!). I'm not too used to working with sonnets...

:iconthewrittenrevolution: (and anyone else): What are the effects of the sounds used in the poem? What effects does the rhythm have? (Basically, are there any areas where sound/rhythm particularly help/hurt imagery/meaning?)
